Generation-Specific Issues
B5 (1995-2001)
The B5 1.8T is prone to oil sludge build-up, particularly when service intervals were extended beyond the recommended 10,000km. The original turbo timer design contributed to coking of oil in the turbo feed lines. Sludge can block oil passages and starve the turbocharger of lubrication.B6 (2001-2005)
The multitronic CVT gearbox is the B6's weakest point. Chain stretch, stepper motor failure, and control unit faults are common after 150,000km. Window regulator failures are also widespread across the range.B7 (2005-2008)
The 2.0 TFSI in the B7 suffers from cam follower wear on the high-pressure fuel pump. If not inspected regularly (every 30,000km), the cam follower can wear through and damage the camshaft, resulting in a costly repair.B8 (2008-2016)
Early B8 models (2009-2011) have a well-documented oil consumption problem caused by poorly designed piston rings. Audi revised the piston ring design from 2012 onwards. Water pump and thermostat housing failures are also common across all B8 years.Source: Alex's Autohaus — Common Problems on the B8 Audi A4 Source: AxleAddict — Is the Audi A4 Really Expensive to Maintain?
