Built on the MLB platform and offering standard Quattro all-wheel drive, the Q5 occupies a sweet spot between the compact Q3 and the full-size Q7, delivering a premium driving experience with genuine off-road capability. The first-generation 8R was offered with a range of four-cylinder and V6 engines, including the popular 2.0 TFSI and the torquey 3.0 TDI. The SQ5, introduced in 2013, was the first S model in Audi's Q range and featured a supercharged 3.0 TFSI V6 producing 354 hp. The second-generation FY, launched in 2017, moved to the MLB Evo platform with a lighter body, improved interior technology, and the option of a 2.0 TFSI with mild-hybrid assistance. The SQ5 FY switched to a turbocharged 3.0 TFSI producing 349 hp.

Common Q5 Issues
The first-generation 8R Q5 with the 2.0 TFSI engine is well-known for timing chain tensioner failures, particularly on vehicles manufactured between 2009 and 2012. The chain can stretch and skip teeth, causing catastrophic engine damage if not addressed. We stock complete timing chain kits including tensioners, guides, and chains for both the EA888 Gen 1 and Gen 2 engines. The transfer case on Quattro models can also develop leaks and bearing noise, especially on higher-mileage vehicles.
Quattro differential service is essential on Q5s used for towing or spirited driving, and neglected differentials can lead to expensive failures. The power tailgate mechanism is another common failure point, with struts losing pressure and the latch assembly wearing out. Water pump failures on the 2.0 TFSI are frequent, often accompanied by thermostat housing leaks. Front control arms and bushings wear relatively quickly on South African roads, and we recommend replacing them in pairs. We maintain strong stock of all these components for both Q5 generations.
