Audi A8 – a luxury class car produced since 1994 by the German brand Audi . The fourth generation of the model has been produced since 2017.

1st Generation

The Audi A8 I was presented for the first time in 1994.

The A8 first generation marked with the symbol D2 debuted in 1994. Unlike its predecessor, the Audi V8 , the car had a self-supporting structure made entirely of aluminum . This solution allowed to reduce the curb weight of the vehicle. The model was available with a standard and a longer (A8L) wheelbase.

The Audi A8 was available as standard in the front-wheel configuration, while competitors in the segment were equipped as standard with rear-wheel drive . With the most powerful units (V8 3.3 TDI and V8 4.2, later also W12 6.0), quattro drive using the Torsen system was standard.

The drive used gasoline engines V6 2.8 (174 HP, from 1996 – 193 HP), V8 3.7 (230/260 HP) and V8 4.2 (300/310 HP – increased the number of valves to 5 per cylinder) and diesel V6 2.5 TDI (150 / 180 HP) and V8 3.3 TDI (225 HP). The W12 6.0 gasoline unit with 420 hp has been available since 2001. 750 copies were created in this configuration. Cars with more powerful engines were equipped with an electronic speed lock at 250 km / h.

In 1999, the first facelift was carried out , the appearance of the headlights and passenger cabin were modernized.

The model hit the North American market with the implementation into production in 1997. The car was then modernized several times, the standard equipment included six airbags . Production of the first generation ended in September 2002.

The Audi S8 D2 was built based on the first generation of the model . The drive was a V8 4.2 engine with 340 power, and from 1999 360 horsepower. Modifications were also made to the braking system, suspension and wheels, the body was equipped with several sport accents.

The A8 is the first mass-produced passenger car whose construction was made exclusively using aluminum . The concept of the aluminum structure of the car developed by Audi AG is called Audi Space Frame (ASF).

2nd Generation

The Audi A8 II was presented for the first time in 2002.

The second generation A8 bearing the D3 symbol hit the European market in November 2002. Compared to the previous model, the body dimensions and wheelbase have been increased. Like the A8 D2, the D3 was also available with a longer wheelbase. Since 2005, modern gasoline engines with an FSI power supply system have joined the drive unit range . The drive was transferred to the front axle or to both axles (quattro). 6-speed Tiptronic automatic transmission was responsible for the transmission of torque to the wheels.

In 2005, the appearance of the radiator grille was modernized – first for the W12 6.0 version, the V8 variants received a new grill the following year. As with the first generation, the S8 version was also created. It was powered by a V10 5.2 engine with 450 HP FSI injection. In addition, the car had a stiffer suspension, ceramic brake discs or larger tires. Year 2008 (production since August 2007) underwent another facelift, it also implemented new driver assistance systems, Audi Side Assist – detecting vehicles in the blind field of side mirrors and Audi Lane Assist- responsive when the driver undertakes a lane change maneuver without prior signaling. Production of the second generation was completed in November 2009.

3rd Generation

The Audi A8 III was presented for the first time in November 2009.

The third generation A8 marked with the symbol D4 was presented in the autumn of 2009, and went into production in the winter of 2009. The A8 D4 was based on the MBL floor plate developed by the Volkswagen Group , the Audi Space Frame technology known from previous A8 generations was also used . As a result, the vehicle is the lightest AWD model in its segment, and fuel consumption is also the best.

The range of propulsion units consists of three gasoline and two diesel engines. As with previous generations, a version with extended wheelbase (A8L) is also available. Under normal conditions, the quattro drive provides 60% of the torque to the rear axle, when the situation requires it, this value can increase to 80% (or up to 60% for the front axle).

In the spring of 2012, the Audi A8 hybrid (also available in the extended version) appeared on the market, equipped with a 2.0 TFSI engine and an electric motor, producing jointly 180 kW (245 HP) system power. The air-cooled lithium-ion battery, located at the rear of the vehicle, allows you to reach only a maximum speed of 100 km / h on electric drive or to travel a distance of three kilometers at a constant speed of 60 km / h. On average, the Audi A8 hybrid consumes 6.3 liters of fuel per 100 km.

In 2013, the A8 debuted after the facelift. The front and rear of the car were significantly changed, more powerful engines were used to consume less fuel. The car uses several technical innovations, including innovative direction indicators made in LED technology, which gradually light up, indicate the direction of turn, and LED headlights with cornering system based on GPS data and blinds covering selected light points, when another vehicle is detected by the camera [30]. The Audi Matrix LED technology is based on the division of the car’s headlights into a series of small, single diodes, cooperating with lenses or reflectors connected in series. Managed fast controller react to the traffic situation by turning on or off, or changing the intensity of light. Thanks to this, they always illuminate the road precisely, illuminating a maximum of a large area, without using a mechanism to adjust the position of the headlights. While driving, a special camera will identify oncoming vehicles, and the Audi Matrix headlights will automatically adjust the range and power of the high beam, disabling the corresponding LED sets. The system works so as not to dazzle oncoming drivers or overtaken vehicles, but to illuminate the space between cars well. The closer the oncoming vehicle is, the more LEDs turn off or dim. At the end of the overtaking maneuver, the high beam lights return to full power, re-enabling previously dimmed LED sections.

Simultaneously with the A8 after the facelift, the German company presented the most powerful version of the S8. This model is powered by a 520 HP 4.0 TFSI engine and accelerates to 100 km / h in 4.2 seconds.

In 2013, the manufacturer presented the Audi A8 W12 Exclusive version, which was produced in 50 copies. The car was equipped with a 6.0-liter, 500-horsepower W12 engine. In addition, the model was only available in the extended variant, and all production was handled by the daughter company quattro GmbH, responsible for the production of high-performance cars and sports versions of serial models.

In mid-January 2014, Audi presented the factory armored version of A8 L Security created for the most demanding customers. The car meets the requirements of ballistic resistance VR7 – the body and windows withstand fire from anti-tank ammunition used by NATO. The car also has a specially shaped floor that provides protection against improvised loads.

In September 2015, the A8 L Security debuted at the Frankfurt salon with resistance raised to VR9 class, which means increased resistance to explosions.

At the same time, the Audi S8 Plus debuted. The car has more power than the “normal” S8. The 4.0 l TFSI V8 Biturbo unit generates 605 hp of power and a maximum torque of 700 Nm, which in overboost mode reaches up to 750 Nm.

4th Generation

The Audi A8 IV was presented for the first time in 2017.

The fourth generation of the Audi A8 is slightly larger and lighter than its predecessor and is distinguished by the design typical of new Audi models with a large, hexagonal radiator grille.
